Stoicism for a Better Life – Weekly exercise (July 24, 2019)

Hello there,

This week for our practice, let us focus on our fellow Cosmopolitans and find inspiration in the words of Seneca from his Moral Letters CIX 15:

“It is in keeping with Nature to show our friends affection and to celebrate their advancement as if it were our very own. For if we don’t do this, virtue, which is strengthened only by exercising our perceptions, will no longer endure in us.”

We have this bad habit of thinking what is good for others must be bad for us. We’re not bad people, but have bad coding form the evolutionary chain of events. What was once a competitive advantage for our species to overcome adversity is today, an anachronism and a negative view of life in a modern society. Instinctively (our survivor animal minds) treat life like a zero-sum game. But what is good for someone else, does not mean I am missing out on something. If anything it is good for me, as it is good for humanity as a whole.

Our ancient guides tell us that virtuous people learn (over time through reflection and repetition) to teach themselves to actively cheer for other people. They tell us we should put aside jealousy and possessiveness, even if someone else’s success comes at our own expense. So this week try and go out of your way to make others “win”, accomplish something, do good or gain something. Then take the time to congratulate them on their virtuous act or betterment. Remember that what is good for others, is good for the whole, which is good for you. Share your examples with the group throughout the week if you can.

As always, much love to you all, and I wish you a wise, tranquil and productive week.
