Stoicism for a Better Life – Weekly exercise (March 6, 2019)

Hello there,

This week for our guidance, let us look once more at Seneca from XLIX 10:

“…the good in life does not depend upon life’s length, but upon the use we make of it; also, that it is possible, or rather usual, for a man who has lived long to have lived too little.”

Over the past week we have looked at times where we do not necessarily focus on being virtuous (dinner table shopping, premature annoyances and judgment, etc…). Let us look at yet another way we avoid living and being consciously virtuous: habits.

Many of us sort of sleep-walk through life, going through repetitive habits, whether it be the routine of the daily drudgery, or getting ready in the morning in a zombie like cruise control mode, or driving through traffic without being in the here and now, etc. So this week, pay attention to times when you are in this “cruise control” or habit mode, and try and snap out of it. Remember that our guides tell us we only truly live when our rational intelligent mind is consciously interacting with the here and now. Consciously try and be aware of what you are doing, why you are doing it, and whether you should keep doing it the way you are, or doing it at all.

I wish a great week to all.
